FTC Proposes Settlement to Limit GM's Data Collection Practices

/ 1 min read

🗺️ FTC takes action against GM for unlawful data practices. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is proposing a settlement with General Motors (GM) and its subsidiary OnStar, prohibiting them from collecting and selling drivers’ precise geolocation and driving behavior data for five years. The FTC’s investigation revealed that GM collected data every three seconds without consumer consent and misled users about its data collection practices. The proposed settlement mandates improved transparency, consumer control over data, and explicit consent for data collection. While no monetary fine was announced, the FTC suggests civil penalties of up to $51,744 per violation, giving GM and OnStar 180 days to comply with the new provisions.
