Russian Hacker Develops Large DDoS Botnet Using Basic Tools

Russian hacker creates massive DDoS botnet using basic tools. A Russian attacker, dubbed “Matrix,” has built a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) botnet by exploiting weak credentials and vulnerabilities in both Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices and enterprise servers. Utilizing publicly available malware tools, Matrix offers various DDoS attack plans through a Telegram store, targeting a range of devices and cloud services, particularly in China and Japan. Aqua Nautilus researchers noted that the botnet could potentially consist of around 350,000 devices if just 1% of the 35 million targeted systems are exploitable. The campaign highlights the ongoing security challenges posed by outdated software and default passwords, emphasizing the need for improved security practices to mitigate such opportunistic attacks.
