FSB implants spyware on detained programmer’s Android device. A Russian programmer, Kirill Parubets, who was detained for allegedly supporting Ukraine, had his Android phone secretly infected with spyware by the Federal Security Service (FSB). Following his release from a 15-day detention, Parubets noticed unusual behavior on his device, which was found to have a trojanized version of a legitimate call recording app. This spyware can track locations, record calls, read messages, and log keystrokes, among other invasive functions. The investigation by Citizen Lab highlights the risks of device compromise when in the custody of hostile security services. Additionally, new infections of Pegasus spyware have been discovered on various devices, indicating ongoing threats to mobile security for journalists and officials.
