A recent presentation at Black Hat Europe highlighted how prompt injection can compromise ChatGPT instances, allowing adversaries to establish a Command and Control (C2) system for remote manipulation. By infecting a user with prompt injection malware, attackers can persist malicious instructions in ChatGPT’s long-term storage, enabling continuous communication with the C2 for updated commands. The research demonstrated the feasibility of creating a botnet-like structure, termed “ZombAI,” which can exfiltrate data and invoke tools based on user interactions. The findings underscore significant security gaps in AI systems, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced defenses against such advanced threats as AI technology becomes more integrated into various sectors.
