New Attacks Target Vulnerabilities in Apple Silicon Chips

/ 1 min read

🪲 New SLAP and FLOP Attacks Expose Vulnerabilities in Apple Silicon. Researchers from Georgia Institute of Technology and Ruhr University Bochum have identified two new side-channel attacks, SLAP and FLOP, that target Apple silicon, potentially leaking sensitive information from web browsers like Safari and Chrome. SLAP exploits the Load Address Predictor in M2, A15, and newer chips, while FLOP targets the Load Value Predictor in M3, M4, and A17 chips. Both attacks leverage speculative execution vulnerabilities, allowing adversaries to infer data from mispredictions. These findings follow recent disclosures of other vulnerabilities affecting macOS, highlighting ongoing security challenges in modern processors. Apple was notified of these issues in mid-2024.
