LLMs' Limitations in Multistage Network Attacks Addressed by Incalmo

/ 1 min read

🛠️ LLMs struggle with multistage network attacks, but Incalmo offers a solution. A recent study evaluated the capability of large language models (LLMs) to execute complex multistage network attacks, revealing that popular LLMs failed to perform these tasks effectively. To address this limitation, the researchers introduced Incalmo, a high-level attack abstraction layer that enables LLMs to specify broader tasks, which are then translated into actionable commands. Testing Incalmo across 10 emulated networks showed that LLMs could successfully execute multistage attacks in 9 out of 10 scenarios, highlighting the importance of high-level abstractions in enhancing LLM performance. Notably, even smaller LLMs with Incalmo achieved success in half of the environments tested, while larger models without it did not succeed at all.
