Banking Fraud Campaign Targets Citizens in East India

/ 1 min read

📱💰 Widespread banking fraud in India fueled by fake apps. A significant campaign involving nearly 900 malware samples is targeting Indian citizens through fake banking applications that impersonate major financial institutions like HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank. Researchers from Zimperium report that these malicious apps, distributed via WhatsApp, trick users into providing sensitive information such as banking credentials and personal identification numbers. The malware intercepts one-time passwords and employs stealth techniques to remain undetected, complicating uninstallation for victims. Concentrated mainly in eastern states like West Bengal and Bihar, this fraud exploits outdated mobile devices and reflects a deep understanding of the local market by the attackers, who are believed to be operating from within India.
